Potterycrafts Laser Gas Kilns
For over thirty years Laser was the leading British manufacturer of gas kilns for potters in craft, education and small industry. Potterycrafts acquired the Laser business in 2012 and together with Laser's technical staff we have re-designed the kilns to enhance the quality and enable a better fit with our existing electric kiln manufacturing processes in Stoke-on-Trent.
The Art of Firing a Gas Kiln
Gas kilns are quite different from electric kilns, firing with a living flame is an art which requires some experience and trial and error to master. Gas kilns must be attended throughout the firing and nurtured though the reduction process. Time spent getting to know your kiln will be repaid many times over in the results you achieve.
Get into Reduction Firing
Reduction means the reduction of oxygen in the kiln atmosphere; in a reduction atmosphere the oxygen component of metallic oxides in the clay and glazes is removed by the flame hungry for oxygen. This can lead to dramatic changes of colour, for example a copper glaze which in an oxidising atmosphere in an electric kiln is turquoise blue, becomes transformed to a deep blood red in reduction - the elusive sang-de-boeuf familiar in Chinese porcelain. Under reduction Iron oxide in the clay becomes a flux helping the body and glaze to become an integrated layer; this action introduces changes in the glazes as oxides from the clay combine with it. There is always an element of chance in the random way that clays and glazes respond in reduction giving a richer, more organic and natural look to the pot.
